Scholarships and Financial Aid

FAFSA

All students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) starting October 1. In order to receive government financial aid, the FAFSA must be filed. It must also be renewed each year that the student is attending college. Parent tax information for the previous tax year is needed to accurately complete the FAFSA.

2018-2019 Scholarship information is updated on the link below. Any new scholarships received by counselors are advertised on morning announcements and added to the spreadsheet linked below.

Tips on finding the right scholarships:

  • Pay attention to deadlines! You don't want to miss out on good opportunities because you missed a deadline. Keeping a calendar of upcoming scholarship deadlines can help keep you organized. Also, most scholarships stay within the same dates from year to year, so Junior year can be a great time to start your scholarship calendar and get ahead of the game.

  • Read through the description/criteria. Is it a school-specific scholarship? Do you have to be a member of a particular club, like DECA? Do you meet the minimum GPA requirement? Make sure you become familiar with all the requirements that are expected to be a good candidate.

  • Familiarize yourself with the website, if one is provided. You want to know as much about the agency/organization that is giving the scholarship.

  • Make sure you have a complete application packet. Do you have to write an essay? Attach a resume? Include recommendation letters? If your packet is incomplete, it may not be reviewed.

Please remember- your counselor can help you find the tools for a successful scholarship search, but it is each student's responsibility to put in the time and the work to find which scholarships work for them individually.

Students attending a college or university in North Carolina will also need to complete the North Carolina Residency Determination application.  Click below to access the site.
